I've been involved in long term care since starting in practice in Circleville in 1981. I have always enjoyed caring for elderly patients. Many things have changed in extended care facilities since I began. The use of restraints has dropped dramatically. The use of sedating drugs is much less common. Nursing homes now have committees to review such things as Quality of care, frequency of falls, and the appropriate use of outside services such as Physical Therapy. These committees function Just like hospital committees. The federal and state goverments have enacted extensive rules and regulations which, if not followed, will result in steep fines or the closure of a facility. I completed my certification for being a Medical Director of a Long Term Care Facility. This has helped me to be more up to date with the regulations and learn even more about care of nursing home patients.
